This Is Us is packing in some big moments in season five, but some of the most emotional have to be the glimpses of the flash-forward. After learning that Randall and Beth are still married last season, we recently got to meet the adult Deja and Annie as they reunite with Tess in episode nine. Not only is it a heartwarming moment between the three sisters, but it’s also incredibly satisfying knowing Randall and Beth’s family is as strong as ever in the future.
While the scene was certainly a twist for fans, it wasn’t a surprise for Eris Baker, who plays present-day Tess on the series. “I kind of knew it was coming with, we kind of talked about it on set,” the 15-year-old actress told POPSUGAR. Although she wasn’t entirely sure how the scene would play out, she was happy to see the Pearson sisters together as adults. “I loved every moment of it. I’m so happy that they’re all still connected in the future. It’s really cool to see them like that. We saw future Tess before, but we never saw future Deja and future Annie, so that was really cool.”
She’s especially excited to see which path each sister takes. “They are three different individuals, and they both have different stories and different perspectives and different views of the world,” she said. “They want to do different things, but at the end of the day, they’re sisters and they’re connected in their family. So them just going on their individual paths and going through it together as sisters is so beautiful to me.”
As season five comes to a close, it also means we’re nearing the end of the series. Showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Dan Fogelman previously noted that the show would likely end after season six, meaning there is only one more season left to tie up the Pearson family’s story. While details about the potential final season haven’t been shared with fans, Fogelman has an open-door policy about spoilers for cast members, including Baker.
Though the actress doesn’t know exactly how the series ends, she isn’t entirely in the dark, either. “I don’t know everything, but I know a lot,” she teased. “I always read the scripts, so I know what’s going on in the next three or four episodes. When we’re on set, everyone is like, ‘Hey, have you heard about this? What’s going on with your character?,’ and I share my information and we kind of know everything. Some people know more than others, but I definitely still get the insight, which is cool.”
After being on the show for five seasons, Baker admitted it will definitely be emotional once everything finally comes to a close. “It’s going to be so sad,” she said. “I can’t even think about it. It won’t be goodbye, because I will know these people for life, but it’s going to be so sad. We’ve had [the show going] on four or five seasons, and if we have one more, I know it’s just going to be beautiful.”
The end of This Is Us will be especially bittersweet for Baker since she practically grew up on the show. “I came on [the show] when I was 10, and now [I’m] 15,” she said. “I was so young, and now I’m this young woman. [The show has] definitely taught me so much about acting. Just to work alongside such incredible actors, they just taught me so much about this industry. It [has] really shaped me as an actress. We’ve just built such a beautiful community, and I’ve built such long-lasting relationships with so many people in this cast. I’m so happy to play Tess along with literally every person I get to work with.”
