We have been treated to an absolute bonanza of photos from the upcoming Barbie film, revealing first-look pictures of the absolute massive cast.

The movie dropped introductory pictures to its cast of characters on Tuesday, separating them out into three categories: ‘Barbies’, ‘Kens’ and ‘humans’ (although there is some interesting overlap).

Among the cast led by Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the supporting players are a stellar bunch too, including Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, Issa Rae as President Barbie and Sex Education actress Emmas Mackey’s Barbie having a Nobel Prize in Physics.

Some exciting surprise additions to the cast include actress and writer Emerald Fennell as Midge, Barbie’s best friend and Jamie Demetriou as a human ‘suit’ (we assume he works for the Mattel-like corps in the film).

Michael Cera has also been unveiled in a multi-coloured striped top and with bright orange hair, and is listed simply as ‘Allan’.

Dame Helen Mirren was also included among the humans in a fun yellow headscarf and purple and grey look, confirmed as the film’s narrator, while Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan plays a diplomat Barbie and was dressed in a fabulous pink and silver 80s-style gown.

Kingsley-Ben Adir, soon to play Bob Marley in the upcoming biopic for the reggae star, was seen in a tropical-print shirt giving an enthusiastic thumbs up as another Ken in the cast, while Hari Nef has been identified as Barbie who is a doctor.

Ana Cruz Kayne features as Supreme Court Justice Barbie, and wears an adorable green and pink matched crop-top and skirt (because you can have it all), while My Mad Fat Diary actress Sharon Rooney is Lawyer Barbie in a fabulous lavender power suit.

Ryan Gosling was once again seen showing off his luscious blonde locks as Ken in an open green and pink striped shirt, while Simu Liu models a green tank top and knowing look.

Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon appears to be everyone’s much-loved and drawn over Barbie, with scribbles on her forehead and home-chopped hair that she’s styled out with a punk rock outfit.

Cast member Ritu Arya’s Barbie is one with a Pulitzer Prize, and clutches a specially-branded microphone that matches her pale pink dress, while new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa is Western-style with a red cowboy hat, denim waistcoat and acoustic guitar.

Directed by Little Woman’s Greta Gerwig, the movie is understood to feature a meta aspect, with Will Ferrell starring as the CEO of a toy company, as seen in the latest pictures.

The first trailer showed Barbie immersed in her own universe, snapshots of which we’ve enjoyed from the plethora of on-set photos during the film’s shoot.

‘It was something that was exciting so I had that terror. There’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, well, anything’s possible,’ Gerwig admitted of the project, calling it a possible ‘career ender’.

She added: ‘I had what felt like vertigo when starting to write it, like, where do you even begin? What would be the story? I knew that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that’s where the best stuff is.’

‘Anything where I’m like this could be a career ender – I probably should do it,’ she told singer (and now star!) Dua Lipa on her At Your Service podcast last year.

Barbie will be released in UK cinemas on July 21, 2023.
