The background story to A$AP Rocky‘s Met Gala fit has just come to light by an Instagram user by the name of Sarah.

The colorful red, yellow, blue, green, and gold floral patchwork quilt was worn by Rocky and garnered a lot of attention as he stood by Rihanna who was clad in black. Sarah was quick to recognize the quilt from her childhood and immediately shared, “My great grandmother’s quilt was donated to an antique/thrift store a while back. When I saw the Met Gala photo I realized instantly that it had to be the same quilt. I read the Vogue article about the designer finding the quilt in Southern California and with his office not that far from us in Venice California, I demanded that my mom go look for the photos of it on our old bed.”

With the side-by-side images she later uploaded of the quilt on her bed, it does in fact appear to be the same quilt their family donated to a thrift store in Southern California years back. Eli Russell Linnetz of ERL, the one responsible for dressing Rocky commented on the repurposed quilt with “There’s an intense narrative to this piece. It’s beautiful on the outside, inside it represents a world of memories.”

So it turns out that the ERL quilt was in fact actually a joint effort between the label and someone’s great grandmother. Excited at the revelation, Sarah went on to conclude with, “Looks like great grandma Mary went to the Met Gala with A$AP Rocky and ERL.” Fans also jumped in on the excitement with, “I hope your grandma gets an invite to the Met Gala next year!”

Check out the images below to see the quilt when it was still being used to keep its original owners warm.
