Simon Cowell's brother has revealed his accident, where he broke his back, was the "catalyst" for his engagement to Lauren Silverman.

Britain's Got Talent boss Simon, 62, has been in a relationship with socialite Lauren, 44, for 13 years and the pair share seven year old son Eric together. Lauren also has son Adam, 16, from her marriage to Andrew Silverman.

Simon was rushed to hospital with a broken back after he was thrown from an electric bike during an accident at his Malibu home in 2020.

The music mogul's longterm partner Lauren supported him throughout his recovery.

And Simon has since proposed to Lauren after 13 years together – and she said yes!

Now, the music boss' older brother Tony has revealed all on The X Factor star's romance with the beautiful brunette and why he thinks Simon popped the question now.

Speaking to Best, Tony revealed: "I believe that accident was the catalyst for Simon. He began to think about his future, and who to share it with. I am very fond of Lauren; she is both a caring mum and a loyal companion to Simon.

"She is constantly reaching out to all our family; and was incredibly supportive to all of us following our mum’s death in 2015."

Tony also revealed that Simon contacted him at 4.30am to tell him about the proposal – and "immediately" thought of their late mum Julie, who passed away in 2015.

He added: "She would have been overjoyed with the news, and it’s sad to think she is not here to see her son finally tie the knot.

"She always wanted him to settle down with a family. I picture her looking down and saying, 'and about time, Simon!'"

It comes as Simon's sibling told OK! he felt the engagement was "tinged with sadness" due to Julie's tragic loss.

Recalling how he felt after being told the exciting news, he told us: "The moment I put the phone down, I thought of our mum, Julie. I know she would have been overjoyed to hear the news.

"So, for me, it was vaguely tinged with sadness, given that Mum will not be able to see Simon tying the knot."

He continued: "Mum desperately wanted Simon to settle down with a family and had only just got to know Lauren before she sadly passed away in 2015."
