Sam Smith, who uses the pronouns they/them, was struck down by a virus last week which affected not just them but their entire team.

The ‘Unholy’ singer has now announced tomorrow’s date in Birmingham will go the same way as last weekend’s concert in Glasgow and must be postponed.

“Sailors, I am so sorry to let you know that my team and I are still really not well, so unfortunately we need to reschedule our Birmingham show to the 27th May 2023,” they began.

“It’s so important to me that we give you the very best version of Gloria. I don’t want you to experience it at anything less.”

The singer, who previously received “satanic” comparisons for their raunchy performances, added: “Thank you so much for understanding, I know how excited everyone is to see the show, and I feel the same about seeing all of you.”

The controversial crooner, who is well known for donning devil horns onstage while thrusting their hips, added that original tickets will still be valid for the rescheduled date.

Meanwhile, the Glasgow date has also been rescheduled and is expected to go ahead on May 25.

They explained in a statement on social media: “Myself and a lot of my team have been hit with a virus that’s made us really unwell.

“It was… really important to me that we had another date to move this to straight away.”

The divisive singer’s appearance today couldn’t be more different than the image they first hit the charts with, back when they released love ballads such as ‘Stay With Me’ back in 2014.

They transformed from a baby-faced ballad singer to an edgy fetish-style performer who was the talk of the town, in a change that was cemented by a devil-horned rendition of ‘Unholy’ at the Grammys this year.

Some have loved the entertainment that the divisive performer has brought to their tour, while others are less sure.

TalkTV broadcaster Piers Morgan has expressed concerns, while a recent headline on the channel read: “Is Sam Smith’s ‘grotesque, Satanic sex act’ suitable for children?”

On his Uncensored show recently, Piers discussed the matter with comedian James Barr, quizzing: “Why is one person they? Why do I have to go along with it?”

James fired back: “Because they’ve asked you to, and that’s respect. Even the Pope respects people’s pronouns!”

The public scrutiny looks set to continue, as fans await the forthcoming rescheduled shows.
