Gardeners’ World favourite Monty Don, 65, has revealed a “stand-off” took place this afternoon between his beloved golden retriever, Nell, and a squirrel. The BBC presenter shared a photo of the situation, which he branded a “tricky moment”, in view of his 872,000 Instagram followers.

Monty’s photo showed Nell carefully watching the squirrel from a distance while hiding amongst the grass outside his house in Longmeadow, Herefordshire.

He captioned the snap: “Stand off: There is a squizzer in the branches-

“Nell can’t climb and the squirrel refuses to come down.

“A tricky moment,” Monty penned.

Fans took to the comments section of the gardener’s post to share their thoughts on the issue.

One person quipped: “Is it doing the manic laugh from up in the branches?”

Another asked: “@themontydon do the squirrels cause any problems in your garden? Ours loving burying things in our pots and digging out a lot of soil in the process!”

A third penned: “Sounds very tense.”

A fourth commented: “My dog is pure love unless you are a squirrel!”

“I’d just give up if I were you Nellie,” a fifth joked.

A sixth wrote: “I called them squizzers when I was little, poor Nell she is lovely.”

Monty and his wife Sarah moved to Longmeadow, in Herefordshire, the West Midlands, in 1991.

On his website, the professional gardener revealed that planning for the garden started two years after they moved into the property and “has never really ceased since”.

Monty has previously described the Jewel Garden as the “physical and spiritual centre of the entire garden”.

He also revealed that it was inspired by his and Sarah’s jewellery business in the 1980s, with the tones of the garden mimicking the “brash, extravagant” colours of their jewellery.

Monty has also shared the plants which make up his two-acre garden, including sunflowers, gingers, dahlias, and zinnias.

Elsewhere, the star recently said he still gets letters from fans regarding the death of his dog Nigel.

The late golden retriever, who was often seen on his show, died in May 2020.

“Everything there was to share was out there, so you knew Nigel as well as I did, and that was really the point,” he said.

“He was everybody’s dog, because everybody got all of him.”

“I still get letters now,” Monty added to The Times.
