Barbie: Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star in trailer

Margot Robbie has been slammed by some social media users for using her Australian accent on the press tour for her new film, Barbie.

In the film, the 33-year-old takes on an American accent as she portrays the iconic main character, opposite Canadian actor Ryan Gosling as Ken.

While she continues to promote the film across the globe, one person has bizarrely questioned why she chose to not stick to the accent used in the film.

Under a post on Facebook, an anonymous user commented: “I don’t like that on the press tour she’s using her Aussie accent as if to let others know she’s a good actress or something because her American English sounds fine.

“Is she here on a working visa? She lives and works in Hollywood – and that’s where she gets her massive income from. Drop the accent.”

Many Facebook users were quick to respond to the bizarre comment.

Ana Horvat Vuković wrote: “Sounds fine? A woman who, I dunno, mastered the Brooklyn accent just for a movie? That’s badassery, that’s what it is.

“A rare true beauty, intelligent woman and a marvellous actress, loved equally by men and women.”

Martha Contreras added: “The ignorance and the nerve… I lose faith in humanity with all those things.”

Caitlyn Mae Moir typed: “It’s her natural accent. How tf is she supposed to drop it?”(sic)

Margot’s accent in the film also prompted mixed reactions on Twitter.

Steph commented: “Margot Robbie’s American accent is… interesting.”

Matilda typed: “I was too scared to say this before but can we finally admit that Margot Robbie’s American accent is not good.”

AOC BDawgg added: “Sometimes I forget Margot Robbie is Australian cause she has a perfect American accent, so when she speaks with her native accent, I get hella thrown off guard.”

Margot, from Dalby, Queensland in Australia, previously said there were “very definite” elements to pick up for the Barbie accent.

Speaking to Vogue Magazine, she explained how the doll shouldn’t sound like she’s from anywhere in particular, therefore has a “general American accent”.

“It’s called GenAm,” she explained.

At the beginning of the film, Barbie speaks in a higher pitch and “everything is very definite”.

She added: “There’s no second thought. There’s no hesitation.”

Margot’s many American accents have also been heard in many of her other films including I, Tonya and Wolf of Wall Street.

She first rose to fame in the long-running soap Neighbours from 2008 to 2011 before making a move to America the following year.
