King Charles and Camilla meet Lionel Richie at garden party

The legendary singer was a special guest at King Charles’s garden party that was held on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace ahead of the coronation.

The King was joined by Queen Camilla, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

The guest list included Lionel Richie, who will be performing at Sunday’s Coronation concert, as well as members of the Royal Voluntary Service who were titled Coronation Champions because of their dedicated volunteer work and services.

Thousands of people enjoyed the event at the Palace where they were able to bask in sunshine and some had the chance to meet Charles and Camilla.

One eagle-eyed fan spotted a blunder after the Hello hitmaker’s encounter with Camilla when he extended his arm to shake the hand of the royal and then a couple of times gently patted her on the arm.

One user took to Twitter and commented on the short video, as Janice noted: “He touched the Queen’s arm!”

The 73-year-old met the King and Queen Consort in the glorious sunshine as he introduced them to his girlfriend 32-year-old model Lisa Parigi.

Camilla, wearing a striking Bruce Oldfield dress with a Philip Treacy hat, said “lovely to see you” to the singer as the pair laughed together.

Charles took off his top hat as he chatted to the American Idol judge at the first garden party he hosted as King, which saw 8,000 well-wishers attend.

In royal etiquette the person needs to wait for the royal to move to shake their hand and touching a member of the Royal Family is not allowed.

As reported by ABC News, Paul Gauger, of VisitBritain, previously told Good Morning America, that it is important to wait until the royal extends their arm for a handshake.

“You shouldn’t touch a member of the royal family. You should always wait for them to extend their hand to you and with that handshake, just be nice and gentle,” he said.

“If she doesn’t extend her hand it’s not a sign of disrespect and that’s where you might enter into conversation.”

His comment came after Donald Trump memorably appeared to break with protocol during a state banquet as he placed his hand on the late Queen’s back, during a visit as US president in 2019.

Trump had delivered his speech to the 170 guests in the ballroom when he gestured towards the Monarch and touched her while she stood to his toast.

The late Queen appeared unfazed by the action as she toasted his words.

Meanwhile, garden parties are an annual occasion for the Royal Family. Every summer, the British monarch hosts two to three garden parties at the Palace, and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Scotland.
