Doctor Who: Millie Gibson announced as the new companion

Millie Gibson is about to become a household name worldwide as she takes on the role of Ruby Sunday, the companion of the new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa. The show will now be shown on Disney+ alongside the BBC which is sure to turn her into a global star.

The 19-year-old actress will be the youngest companion ever when she hits screens in the coming weeks and has spoken about how she feels the role is fate.

Having made her name playing tearaway Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street she discovered that she had the opportunity to star in the BBC sci-fi series on the same day she filmed her last scenes for the ITV soap.

“My agent rang me and said, ‘How are you doing?’. And I was like, ‘I’m a bit down, it was my last day today’, and he said, ‘Well, this will keep you occupied’,” she told Doctor Who magazine.

“When he told me what it was, I just kept thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is fate, this is fate’,” she revealed.

But who is the Doctor’s new sidekick? Express.co.uk has taken a look inside her life to find out everything you need to know.

Manchester-born Millie famously has a line across her eyebrow, which looks like she is following the current eyebrow slit trend.

However, that is an actual scar which she got from falling down a set of stairs as a baby, rather than a fashion statement.

The young star, who has a lookalike older sister Amy, 25, has been acting since she was a child, taking drama classes at Oldham Theatre Workshop,

At the age of just 12 she was snapped up by an agent and quickly secured her first role as Indira on CBBC show Jamie Johnson.

Following that role, it was Coronation Street which brought her to public attention. After an initial five-episode stint as the daughter of loan shark Rick Neelan, played by Greg Wood, she later became a series regular and was at the centre of some hugely dramatic storylines.

For her portrayal of Kelly, she won the award for Best Young Actor at the 2022 British Soap Awards and was also nominated for Best Actress at the Inside Soap Awards later that year.

Off-screen, she is currently loved up with new boyfriend Tom Neatis, who she was spotted with in Salerno, Italy earlier this year. Tom owns a music label and she had been leaving sweet comments on his social media posts, dating back to last November – suggesting they have been dating for around a year now.

Prior to Tom, Millie was dating her childhood sweetheart Drew Cunningham, whom she is thought to have split from in 2021.

Millie’s first appearance as Ruby will be in December after David Tennant’s three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials have aired.
