Friends star James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther on the hit series, has announced he has prostate cancer.

The 59 year old actor, who played the Central Perk manager throughout the ten year-long series, told NBC he was diagnosed with cancer in 2018.

Since his diagnosis James revealed the cancer has since spread to other parts of his body, including his bones and spine.

James added the aggressive cancer has also left his lower body paralysed.

The actor also heartbreakingly revealed his cancer was unfortunately not caught early and was only found during a routine checkup.

Speaking on NBC, the Gunther actor said: "I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to my bones.

"I've been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the past three years… It's stage 4. Late stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it's gonna probably get me."

James, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, explained doctors were optimistic when he was first diganosed, but the cancer began to "mutate" at the beginning of the pandemic.

He said: "I missed going in for a test, which was not a good thing.

"So the cancer decided to mutate at the time of the pandemic and so it's progressed."
