American soapstar Cody Longo has tragically passed away at the age of 34.

The late actor was best known for his roles in Nashville, Days of Our Lives and Hollywood Heights. He also starred in Piranha 3D, the 2009 remake of Fame, and one of the Bring It On films.

His wife Stephanie, with whom he shared three children, shared a statement following her tragic loss, telling press: "He was an amazing father and the best husband. Our whole world is shattered."

US outlet TMZ reports that the actor's body was discovered at his home in Austin, Texas, by law enforcement, after Stephanie reported that she was unable to contact him.

The publication reports: "Longo's wife, Stephanie, was at work at a local dance studio and got an uneasy feeling when she couldn't reach him… so she asked police to go and check on him.

"Cops responded to the home, and when Longo didn't answer, they kicked the door down… finding him dead in bed."

The outlet have been told by a member of Cory's family that he struggled with alcohol abuse for years, and went to rehab over the summer. However, an official cause of death has not yet been announced.

Talent manager and producer Alex Gittelson has led social media tributes to the young star, posting to Twitter: "Devastated beyond words at the tragic loss of my dear friend and client, Cody Longo. My heart breaks for his beautiful family. You will be missed, brother."

Actress Brittany Underwood, who appeared in Hollywood Heights with Cory, shared a tribute to Instagram. Posting a pictures of their scenes together, she penned the caption: "Deeply saddened and at a loss for words hearing of the passing of Cody Longo …..still processing….still doesn’t feel like it really happened….

"Thank you for taking the incredible journey with me of Eddie and Loren….it’s still one of my favorite stories I ever got to be a part of….my heart and soul go out to your wife and kids and all those you left behind…..it just….doesn’t feel real…."

Fans have also shared a number of tributes, with one writing: "Just heard the news about @codylongo. My heart is broken! Hollywood Heights is still one of my favorite shows even more than 10 years after it was on TV. So sad!! RIP!!"

And a second added: "RIP Cody Longo. Such a beautiful talent in singing and acting. Love his music and he was amazing in Hollywood Heights and Bring It On: Fight To The Finish."
