Up until a few years ago, I wasn’t what you would call a “mascara person.” I have very sensitive eyes, so I used to avoid mascara and eyeshadow at all costs. However, over the last year, I’ve begun to recognize just how much just a few swipes can change my look for the better. It’s the fastest way to make my eyes pop and an easy way to pull my entire makeup look together quickly, which is why it’s become one of my favorite beauty products to test. So when I heard that Byredo was launching the Astronomical Mascara ($46), I added it to my list of things to try immediately.

When it comes to my lashes, they could definitely use some help. They’re short and stubby, and if you’re looking at me head-on, you’d probably assume I didn’t have any eyelashes at all. I am not exaggerating when I say they are truly invisible without mascara. They stick straight out and barely hold a curl, and even though my arm hair is as black as night, the color didn’t make its way to my eyelashes, which are light, wispy brown.

Because of that, I’m very particular when it comes to mascara. I love products that give my lashes a lift and curl, and they score extra points if I don’t have to apply more than two coats. I’m not a fan of mascaras that create clumps, and I absolutely despise when the formula flakes or leaves dark marks underneath my eyes.

As for Byredo’s Astronomical Mascara, it promises everything you’d ever want in a mascara. It’s 100 percent vegan and free from GMOs, and it promises to be long lasting, volumizing, and curl boosting with a single stroke. When I opened up the box, the first thing I noticed about the product was the packaging. It’s housed in a sleek neon-green tube, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Not only is it chic, but it’s also practical. The ergonomic design makes it easy to hold when you’re applying the mascara, and I can’t imagine myself digging in my makeup bag for more than two seconds before spotting the easily recognizable bright-green color.

The design of the mascara wand itself also has a curved brush that allows you to coat every lash evenly, all while giving the lashes lift. To apply, I started at the base of my eyelashes before raking the brush upward. Since the wand was curved, I didn’t need to zigzag my way through my lashes, which made application easy and pain free.

Since I had never tested a mascara from Byredo before, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. However, after swiping on just two coats, I was left with lashes that were both long and curled. Plus, the volume was definitely there. My lashes were no longer invisible; in fact, they were far from it. The formula was lightweight and coated my lashes easily, and the results were dramatic-looking lashes that I can usually only achieve with falsies and a makeup artist to apply them (because I’m hopeless at applying false lashes myself).

Throughout the day, I didn’t notice any issues with smudging, clumping, or fallout. Plus, this mascara came off easily during my typical cleansing-balm and face-wash routine — no extra products or scrubbing required.

A quick list of pros: the packaging on this product is both chic and recognizable, making it easy to find in the sea of beauty products that is my makeup bag. The formula goes on smoothly and feels lightweight. It dries quickly and doesn’t smudge or flake throughout the day. It lengthened my lashes while helping them hold a curl and adding volume.

As for the cons, the big one is the cost. At $46, this mascara is on the pricey side. However, you get what you pay for: a really high-quality formula. This mascara also only comes in black, which may deter those looking for a lighter color. Finally, it does have a very subtle, light scent. Although it’s definitely not unpleasant, that might be something to take note of if you aren’t a fan of fragrances in your beauty products.

All in all, this mascara definitely delivered on all of its promises, and I will absolutely be reaching for it whenever I’m looking to give my lashes the boost they need.
