Summer skiing? Yes, it’s possible, if you find a glacier. And the most amazing thing about it? You don’t have to go far, with snow-covered mountains as close as France.
That’s right, whilst everyone else sips rosé and soaks up the July sun in their shorts and t-shirts, you could be tearing through the skies in your winter wear.
So if you missed out on a snow sports jaunt this year, then all is not lost because from Switzerland to France, here are the best summer skiing spots in Europe.
Les Deux Alpes, France
Les Deux Alpes is where you’ll find Europe’s largest skiable glacier.
The height of the terrain, which reaches 11,811ft above sea level, means there’s plenty of snow during the warmer months, which is why its summer skiing season is one of the longest in Europe – dates vary, but in 2022 its summer skiing area will open from May 28 to August 15.
There’s even a dedicated slalom area for skiers with a need for speed, along with a sprawling freestyle zone with separate areas for beginners, intermediates and experts.
Visit Les 2 Alps for more information.
Zermatt Switzerland
Head to Zermatt for some of the best glacier skiing in Europe. The Matterhorn’s summer ski area is legendary – ski teams from 22 countries use it as a training base and its 12 miles of pistes offer something for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.
Zermatt is also surrounded by 38 mountain peaks with heights of more than 13,123ft, so it’s a fantastic mountain biking destination, and the resort’s also known for its brilliant restaurants.
We recommend the Adler Hitta on the Findeln Alp.

Saas-Fee Switzerland
There’s a reason some of the world’s top ski teams head to Saas-Fee’s glaciers to train during the summer months.
To start with, summer skiers can access 12 miles of immaculately groomed pistes and a fantastic snow park.
Regarded as one of the world’s best summer freestyle parks, the Stomping Ground was designed by legendary park designer Charles Beckinsale.
Love a great view? After a day on the slopes, hop on the Metro Alpin – the world’s highest underground funicular – to soak up the views from the Mittelallalin, 11,339ft above sea level.
Visit Saas-Fee for more information.
