AN ABANDONED airport in the UK could re-open to flights by 2025.

Manston Airport, located in southeast Kent, closed back in 2014 after reporting huge daily losses.

Since then, it has been used lorry park for drivers between the UK and France via Dover.

And earlier this year, it was used as a filming location for the blockbuster Empire of Light, featuring Olivia Colman.

Lots of the set pieces remain in place, including a fake Margate hospital sign.

However, recent images inside the airport reveal the abandoned terminals, which remain intact.

Signs have been left as they were including the Duty-Free shop and the directions.

The red-carpeted departure lounge overlooks the deserted runways too.

Formerly known as RAF Manston, the airport was first used by planes back in 1916 during the First World War.

It was also used through WWII owing to its location close to the front line but was frequently attacked and heavily bombed during the Battle of Britain.

However, it opened to commercial passengers in the 1980s.

It was renamed Kent International Airport in 1989, being opened by Sarah, the Duchess of York.

Airlines included Flybe and KLM operated from the airport with short-haul flights to Europe, although other holiday companies had charter flights too.

The airport closed in 2014 – but it could soon reopen to flights again.

The UK government has given approved development for Manston Airport to reopen, confirmed by the Transport Secretary.

The airport's owners RiverOak Strategic Partners (RSP) confirmed plans to invest £500million in developing the Manston Airport, for both air freight flights and passenger flights.

It hopes to reopen again by 2025, more than 10 years after it closed.
