BRITS have shunned Benidorm in favour of alternative destinations such as Turkey and Egypt this year.

The popular Spanish resort has seen a fall of 454,000 holidaymakers from the UK compared to the previous year.

In its latest statistics, hotel association Hosbec said that overnight stays by British tourists have fallen by eight per cent compared to last year.

Instead, Brits are heading to destinations such as Turkey and Egypt, in part because there are such great bargains to be had.

Last year, around 319,000 British nationals visited Egypt and while 1.6 million went to Turkey according to the Foreign Office.

The fall of the Turkish lira last year also resulted in a stronger pound according to the Post Office.

However, despite losing more Brits, Spanish tourists have filled the gap with 494,000 more overnight stays, increasing by 11 per cent.

Hosbec president, Antonio Mayor Suarez, said in the report: "Despite the opening and strong commercialisation of competing destinations such as Turkey and Egypt, we can be very satisfied with the results obtained in Benidorm, and few tourist destinations can present this solvency report."

Last year, a British woman complained there were too many Spanish people at her hotel in Benidorm where she was staying on holiday.

In response, Toni Mayor told Sun Online: "Surely this tourist was looking for their tour operator to return the money for their holiday, reflective of the 'culture of claim' that we see, with some claims as inappropriate as the one described by this tourist."
