A woman has spoken out after her friend’s two-year-old daughter was asked to cover up at a swimming pool.
Katie Sturino from New York City took to Instagram to share an anecdote from a friend who took her toddler for a swimming lesson.
The little girl was dressed in swimsuit bottoms when two lifeguards approached her mother and said that she must cover up, despite many of the other little boys at the pool also being half dressed.
The lifeguard told the mother that there was no nudity allowed by the pool, but Katie has criticized this logic and said that ‘different rules for boys and girls start young and are reinforced constantly’.
Katie asked social media users for their opinions on the controversial topic, and many were enraged about the ‘insane’ approach to children.
Katie Sturino from New York City took to Instagram to question whether toddler girls should have to cover up while swimming
The video, which attracted over 300,000 likes, revealed the details of the incident and Katie asked viewers whether toddler girls should have to cover up.
She said: ‘I was just catching up with my friend, and she said that her two-year-old daughter was at her swim lessons yesterday and all the little boys around her were shirtless.
‘Baby boys were shirtless in diapers and she was in… a swimsuit bottom and didn’t have her rash guard on yet and the lifeguard came over.
‘Two different lifeguards came over at two different times and said “ma’am you need to put a shirt on your daughter, there’s no nudity allowed at the pool”‘.
Katie quickly conveyed her anger at the lifeguard’s comment and said: ‘This is when they start policing our bodies.’
She added that this is when girls are told that there is something wrong with themselves, that they must cover up, and that women’s bodies are not appropriate.
But she quickly pointed to the fact that the child was only a two-year old baby, and that ‘these rules are put on women from the start.
Katie then asked her viewers: ‘What do you think?
Katie argued that this is when the policing of women’s bodies commences, and that it is completely inappropriate
Users were quick to share their opinions in the comment section, and many were upset with the occurrence
The video received an immense volume of responses, but many of them with infuriated with the occurrence.
One said: ‘What. As a pediatrician and expert in the bodies of children, there is no biological difference between a toddler girls chest and a toddler boys chest. That is absolutely insane.’
A second person added: ‘Sexualizing a 2 year old is what that sounds like.’
A third added: ‘This is so sad and disgusting. A baby. She’s literally a baby. No puberty, not even a tween. There is zero sexual ANYTHING about someone her age.’
A fourth person wrote: ‘In all of Europe it is commonplace to see children with no bathing suits on at beaches and just bottoms at pools.
‘We have no issues with it. When I lived in the US my aunt had a pool party and my daughter only had on bottoms, she was 3-4 and my aunt said “can you put a top on her, my grandson’s keep looking” wth?
‘How about you have a conversation with your grandsons.’
Another person said: ‘This is just disgusting and disturbing!! It’s already bad when society is restricting grown women, but doing that to a child?! And in the same breath sexualising her? A two year old?! That is just so wrong to the core!’
