‘The surgery means I can only stomach small plates of food,’ explained Emma.

‘I had to have a gastric bypass as I knew my mindset wasn’t strong enough to stop eating junk.

BREAKFAST – MCDONALDS – £26.50

LUNCH – KFC OR SUBWAY – £90

DINNER – CHINESE TAKE-AWAYS X 3 PER WEEK = £75

WEEKLY FOOD SHOP INCLUDES FROZEN PIZZA, CHIPS, BURGERS AND SNACKS – £100

FIZZY DRINKS SUCH AS DAILY RED BULL – £10 PER WEEK

TOTAL – £301.50

‘As a café waitress, it was impossible for me to stick to a diet and be healthy as I’m constantly surrounded by bad food.

‘It was easier for me to have a bacon and egg sandwich rather than boiled eggs.

‘But now, 16 months on, I am like a new woman.

‘I make good food choices and feel confident in my own skin.’

Emma admits feeling ‘disgusted’ by the amount of money she was once wasting on take-outs.

She now puts the money into her son’s savings account for when he is older – which now sits at around £8000.

She said: ‘I was addicted to food and it came at a price.

‘My weekly food shop which was mainly frozen pizzas, chips, burgers and lots of snacks was £100.

‘I would then order enough food for two people from the Chinese – three times per week which was £25 each time.

‘I’d also have a McDonald’s breakfast and oven food, a foot-long Subway sandwich or KFC for my lunch.

‘My bad eating habits spiralled out of control when I had my son, Kane, now five.

‘As I began snacking on family-sized chocolate and packs of crisps during the night feeds.

‘I justified the snacking by saying the junk was giving me energy.

‘I put on seven stone during the first year of his life which caused me to be depressed and a hermit.

‘I feel guilty that I spent so much money so now I put the money away for Kane as a way of saying sorry.’

Emma recalls suffering from panic attacks during walks to the local shops as she assumed everyone was looking at her.

Her size 22 frame began to take its toll on her mental health which prompted her to enquire about surgery.

Emma’s size 22 frame began to take its toll on her mental health which prompted her to enquire about surgery.

She said: ‘Looking back, I feel guilty as I missed out on Kane’s first year. I was taking anti-depressants and very rarely left the house.

‘I tried every quick fix in the book such as shakes, baby food and tree-syrup diets.`

‘The doctor referred me to a surgeon in Luton and after two years on a waiting list I had the surgery in December 2019.

‘It has given me a completely new lease of life. I am now able to play with Kane witho ‘I do have loose skin but I am embracing it. It reminds me of how far I have come. I don’t want to carry on being unhappy now that I am grateful for what it is. ‘
