Many adults probably never check their wage slip every month.

But did you know you could be owed money from your employer without realising? According to Martin Lewis, thousands of workers might be impacted.

In his weekly newsletter on MoneySavingExpert, he claimed if you're on minimum wage you might be one of 300,000 still underpaid. And he said to act now.

In the weekly tip, the 51-year-old wrote: "Even employment agencies get it wrong. Please spread the word." There could be a number of reasons why you're getting underpaid.

In the post, MSE wrote: "If you're paid the legal minimum (as 1.6million people in the UK are) there's no wriggle room in your salary. So any mistakes, like unpaid working time or wage deductions, put you at risk of being underpaid.

"Many who believe they're on minimum wage are in reality being paid less than they should be – the Low Pay Commission estimates over 330,000 people were underpaid in 2022."

One of the reasons you could be getting underpaid is because of uniform or safety equipment you need for the job. You need to buy these things for your job but your employer should make sure it doesn't impact your salary.

Also you should be paid for all your working time and receive a pay rise every April. It's also worth remembering if you're working for a big company, they could still make the mistake.

If you think you're being underpaid, Martin's website suggests checking the national minimum wage calculator on the GOV.UK website. Speaking to the ACAS helpline could explain the risks and benefits with your complaint.

You could also ask HMRC to investigate your wages, if it finds out you're being underpaid they could take your employer to work if they refuse to pay. Alternatively, you can speak directly to your boss.
