    Tempur Mattress Review: Quick Summary

Tempur is a premium mattress brand with premium pricing. For your money, you'll receive a high-quality mattress made using NASA technology and 30 years of sleep expertise, as well as excellent customer service.

Tempur isn't a bed-in-a-box company which means your new mattress will come unrolled, like the good old days. We saw this as a positive as we wanted to use it straight away and didn't need to wait for it to inflate, though it's something to consider if you're planning on waiting to set up your new sleeping arrangement as it'll take up a lot more space.

Despite lacking the main feature of a bed-in-a-box company, Tempur offers many of the same perks, such as a 100-night trial, a 10 year guarantee and a 0% finance option, putting them on a level playing field with some of the big dogs in the mattress world.

The Sensation Luxe mattress is on the firmer side and the material is designed to conform to your body to distribute your weight evenly and relieve pressure points, so it feels very supportive. We found it to be far thicker and cooler than our former memory foam mattress, plus it's easier to care for as well as there's no need to flip it, and it comes with a removable, washable cover.

If support is what you're after in a mattress, then the Sensation Luxe won't disappoint. However, it's worth bearing in mind that it's one of the most expensive mattresses on the market. So if that's a factor, or if you prefer a softer sleep set-up, we'd recommend taking a look at the more affordable rival mattress brandsSimba or Emma instead.

    Unboxing and First Impressions

The ordering and delivery process was very straightforward, and the communication from the brand was excellent. We were given a precise timeslot in advance and they stuck to it, making it very easy to plan our day around the delivery.

The mattress came unrolled and wrapped in plastic, so we were able to get it unpackaged and onto our bed within minutes. Like a lot of mattresses these days, the Sensation Luxe is extremely heavy and we required assistance to get it up the stairs and onto the bed frame (thanks, dad!).

The first thing we noticed was the thickness of the mattress. It's 30cm thick, which is much deeper than our former mattress and meant our dog struggled to hop up onto the bed – not the worst thing to aid a good nights sleep. However, it did mean that our regular sheets struggled to fit over the extra layers and we decided to invest in some deep fitted sheets.

The other thing that instantly caught our attention was the firmness of the mattress. Our old mattress was thin and soggy, something we hadn't really noticed until we were presented with the super supportive and inviting Tempur Luxe. We think some might find the mattress too firm – it's the brand's firmest on offer – so if you prefer a squishier mattress, this probably isn't the one for you.

  • Performance

When the Sensation Luxe first arrived it had a new mattress smell, which lingered for about a month. This isn't unusual, it's harmless and Tempur says it will disappear within 4-6 weeks, but even so, we were glad when it had gone.

Switching from a thin soft memory foam mattress to Tempur's firmest option took us a while to get used to. In hindsight, we probably didn't need as much support as the Luxe offers, and we might've adapted quicker to Tempur's medium-firm offering, The Original.

The brand recommends sleeping on your new mattress for 60 days to get fully used to it, and we do think that time frame was about right. We imagine that we'd now struggle to switch back to a softer design, especially as it has helped relieve some minor back pain we were experiencing.

We tested the mattress out during a heatwave and noticed that we remained cooler than we had on our former memory foam, which was a pleasant realisation. We'd previously suffered to sleep in warm temperatures but experienced a much more settled sleep with the Sensation Luxe.

    Features and Design

The Tempur Sensation mattress comes in three different depths, which are:

    1. Supreme – 21cm
    2. Elite – 25cm
    3. Luxe – 30cm

Therefore, if you feel the Luxe mattress might be too thick, you can always opt for the Supreme or Elite instead.

    The Luxe is made up of four different layers;

    • 7cm Tempur Comfort material
    • 8cm Tempur Material with Dynamic Support technology
    • 2 x 7.5cm Durabase technology

It's then topped with the QuickRefresh Cover, which can be washed up to 60C.

The Tempur Material (with Dynamic Support) is a type of memory foam that was NASA's innovation, and it was originally designed to support astronauts during take-off. Without getting too scientific, it has visco-elastic cells which mould and adapt to your body to provide you with extra support and comfort. Fancy.

The mattress is designed to 'bounce' with the absence of springs, which we feel it makes good on. There's also no need to flip it, which is a relief as it's so heavy.

How much does the Tempur Sensation Luxe cost?

Prices for the Sensation Luxe mattress start at £1999 and goes up to £3399 depending on the size you opt for.

If you select one of the thinner mattresses, the prices start a bit lower; the Sensation Supreme starts at £1249 and the Sensation Elite starts at £1599.

There are 10 different sizes to choose from, with the larger sizes naturally costing more. You can see all the sizes here, but for reference here are the standard sizes and their prices:

    • Single – £1999
    • Double – £2799
    • King – £3199
    • Super King – £3399

This puts the Tempur Sensation Luxe at the higher end of the scale. For comparison Brook and Wilde's Ultima mattress costs £1799 for a standard double and a double Simba's Hybrid Luxe costs £1699.

If the price is a deciding factor, we'd recommend keeping an eye out for deals especially around key shopping periods like Black Friday and Boxing Day.

Tempur Sensation Luxe Mattress Review: The Verdict

There's no doubt that Tempur Sensation Luxe is a premium quality mattress, which delivers on comfort and pressure relief.

If support is the primary factor in your mattress search, we think the Tempur Sensation Luxe is an excellent option. And with the 100-night trial, you can always try it out risk-free to see if it complements your sleeping style.

However, if money is a deciding factor or you prefer a softer mattress, we think there are other more affordable and less firm options out there that will satisfy your needs.
