Calling all parents who are sick of hearing their own (now hoarse) voice shouting their kids down for dinner: this life hack is for you.
Laura Cuniff, 30, hatched a plan to make beckoning her kids down for food as simple as pressing a button – literally.
She decided to install doorbells into her kitchen cupboard and link them up into speakers in each of her four children’s rooms.
Laura, who lives with her partner Adrian in Plymouth, came up with the idea as her younger child, aged six, is autistic, non-verbal and has ‘various sensory processing difficulties’, meaning he is sensitive to noise.
All of the shouting would ‘hurt his ears,’ says Laura. ‘We were struggling to call the kids down without him grabbing his ears.’
So she fished out an old doorbell from the shed and gave it a go.
When it proved successful, she forked out for three more and put them in each of her older children’s rooms.
‘It’s brilliant because the noise of the bell cuts through their headphones,’ says Laura.
‘It would also work for garages and sheds, or anywhere with a plug socket!’
She posted the hack on her Instagram and TikTok accounts, @inside_our_riverside, where she and Aidan post videos about their first home as well as life hacks.
On Instagram, the life hack garnered 2.6 million views and 108,000 likes.
Meanwhile, TikTok got nearly 280,000 views and more than 45,000 likes and commenters called the idea ‘genius’.
‘Omg I need one of these,’ wrote one commenter.
‘So doing this!’ wrote another TikTok user.
Laura set up their social media accounts at the start of this year.
‘I was in a rut of being “mum” constantly and wanted something to focus on,’ she says.
‘It’s a dream to be able to social media full time, my followers always seem to be laughing with me at my stories so it does brighten my day up!’
