A DIY savvy mum constructed an incredible floating bed by herself in just five hours – and it only cost £160.
Jade Toyne, 35, from Lincolnshire was researching floating beds online for her daughter, Mia, 12, but found there was very little choice on offer.
The mum, who lives with her daughter and husband Michael, 38, decided to take the project on herself after having picked up some DIY skills by watching YouTube videos.
In the past, Jade has tiled her own kitchen and bathroom, made a kitchen table and created a cupboard out of scaffolding boards to hide her unsightly gas meter.
And now, her latest creation has left social media users wanting more, with an incredible 14,000 likes on her floating bed post.
‘My daughter asked for a floating bed and I did a quick Google search but not much came up,’ Jade says.
‘She went to her nan’s on a Sunday and I did it as a surprise. It only took five hours.’
For the bed, Jade used leftover wood from a previous loft conversion and bought some timber, screws, wood glue and LED lights.
‘Firstly, I brainstormed about the size on the base because you want to make it small enough that you can’t see it, but big enough that it won’t tip,’ she explains.
‘We knew we wanted it to be a double bed. Next, we made the frame to fit the mattress. I made slats for the bed. It was a double bed frame, but split in two and measured at 800 x 600mm.
‘Each section was screwed together separately. First base in, second base on top.
‘I also added strengthening beams down the centre and placed pieces of wood on either side.
‘And I put off-cuts in the inside to help strengthen it and screw it together, like batons.
‘Then I put a third layer (slats) two sections on the frames and screwed them down.’
With the base completed, Jade placed LED lights around it. She easily fixed them onto the wood thanks to the sticky strips on the back of the product.
Unsurprisingly, Jade’s daughter was overjoyed with her new bed.
‘She had tears in her eyes,’ Jade recalls.
‘She thought she would be getting a normal bog-standard [bed], she loves it and had a friend round straight away, and hasn’t really come out of her room.
‘She sits in the dark with the [bed] lights on.’
