Applying for a job can often feel like a long and drawn-out process.
But it seems that one area could be holding a lot of people back – their CVs.
New research has found that 62.4% of UK CVs contain at least one spelling error – and more than 5,000 CVs (3.4%) feature more than 20 mistakes.
Some of the most common incorrect spellings include ‘organisation’, ‘modelling’ and ‘behaviour.’
Adzuna looked at more than 147,000 UK CVs uploaded to ValueMyCV in 2021, to explore the most common mistakes made in the application process.
It found that three in 10 CVs contained five or more errors – with ‘judgement’, ‘transferable’ and ‘liaising’ also featuring on the top ten list of misspelt words.
Another frequent fail was individuals using American spellings, such as ‘analyze,’ rather than British English.
Only 55,341 of the 147,272 CVs analysed were spelling error free.
Most common misspelt words:
1. Organisation
2. Modelling
3. Behaviour
4. Equipment
5. Labour
6. Judgement
7. Transferable
8. Practised
9. Liaising
10. Demeanour
Beyond spelling errors, 28.8% of CVs lacked a personal summary outlining career ambitions.
Similarly, more than a quarter had unexplained gaps on their employment history – which can often ring alarm bells for recruiters.
Likewise, 26.4% of jobseekers forgot to include a postal address on their CV, and 23.3% submitted CVs either too brief or too lengthy.
In addition to this, 5.5% included an invalid email or no email address – which would prevent an employer from contacting them.
