Jenna Bush Hager gave her husband, Henry Hager, a “manipulative ultimatum” years before they got engaged.
During Tuesday’s episode of “Today,” Jenna revealed that, at the time, she had plans to leave Washington, D.C., but wanted to see if Henry would stop her.
The talk show host, 41, recounted that in a “dramatic fashion,” she told her then-boyfriend, “Now, listen if you don’t want me to move to Latin America, we need to get engaged.”
She further described their conversation as “a manipulative ultimatum.”
The following Valentine’s Day, Henry took her out to a nice restaurant, where they were given a champagne bottle with a message tied around it that read “don’t go.”
Thinking this was the moment she would be getting engaged, the “Everything Beautiful in Its Time” author was so overjoyed that she nearly “[beeped]” her pants.
However, she then discovered that the message wasn’t written properly and it was supposed to have said, “Go, and when you come back, I’ll be here.”
“I was, like, ‘Yes, I will marry you,’ and [Henry’s] face dropped,” Jenna added. “I mean, he could have cried. Well, anyway, he was not proposing.”
Since the daughter of former President George W. Bush was already a public figure at the time of the incident, she said the Washington Post scooped up the story and mentioned in the article that she had “soiled” her pants.
To make matters worse, Jenna said that Henry did not end up proposing to her until “years” later.
For Valentine’s Day this year, the TV host said her husband revived the funny story by framing the article so they could “always remember the humiliation that comes with love.”
The couple has now been married for nearly 15 years after tying the knot in 2008.
Jenna and Henry also share three kids: daughters Mila, 9, and Poppy, 7, and son, Hal, 3.
