Prince Harry returned to the U.K. after more than a year away amid the death of his grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The younger prince resigned from his role as a senior working royal and left the U.K. for good in March 2020 just as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began to surge across the globe.
After years of struggling in the royal spotlight, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, moved their young family to California to forge their own path. Since then, they’ve continued with their charity work, garnered new roles, and launched deals with Spotify and Netflix.
This, along with a shocking tell-all interview the couple gave to Oprah Winfrey, left things between the Sussexes and the royals extremely strained. But how has Prince Harry‘s relationships with Prince Charles and Prince William changed since the duke’s funeral?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spoke out against the British royal family
In a shocking interview with Oprah that aired on March 7 on CBS, Meghan and Prince Harry got candid about why they left the royal family. They claimed that the royals have a tight-knit relationship with the British tabloids. As a result, they allowed the tabloids to run rampant with racist lies and slander about the duchess though the Sussexes begged them to intervene.
Meghan revealed that all of this took a major toll on her mental health. She said that when she reached out for help for her suicidal ideation, she was turned away. The couple also brought up racist remarks by an unnamed family member about their son Archie’s skin tone.
Moreover, the prince accused his father of cutting him off financially and refusing to take his phone calls. In the end, he said that he was trapped.
“I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped,” he said. “But the moment that I met Meg, and our worlds collided in the most amazing of ways and then [I began] to see how trapped within the system, like, the rest of my family are. My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave, and I have huge compassion for that.”
Prince Harry returned to the U.K. for Prince Philip’s funeral
While the Sussexes had built an open line of communication with the royals amid the pandemic, things got quite tense following the Oprah interview. Still, Prince Harry was determined to show up for his grandfather’s service, making sure that it was a drama-free experience.
“This trip was to honor the life of his grandfather and support his grandmother and relatives. It was very much a family-focused period of time,” royal expert Omid Scoobie told Harper’s Bazaar.
Prince Harry still has issues with Prince Charles and Prince William
Though Prince Harry was present and spoke openly with his family at the funeral and in the days prior, there are still a ton of issues to work through. “Saturday broke the ice for future conversations, but outstanding issues have not been addressed at any great length. The family simply put their issues to one side to focus on what mattered,” Scoobie clarified.
Hopefully, with the impending arrival of Baby Girl Sussex and this new chapter in royal history, the healing can begin soon.
