Hawaiian shack with bamboo walls and an OUTDOOR toilet hits the market for $165,000 – but the seller promises ‘divine’ sunrises and sunsets
- The home is in Naalehu, on the southern tip of the island of Hawaii
- The eco-friendly property is listed as ‘brand new – built in 2021-2022’ and has solar panels, a wind turbine, and a water catchment system
- It was ‘tastefully built with solid construction’ with a 100 sq. ft. bedroom – the only room with solid walls
- The bottom floor is a covered lanai – a type of porch – where a kitchen sits between two bamboo walls
- The toilet and shower are also enclosed in walls made of bamboo that offer little privacy
- A Zillow listing promises a ‘modern and cool’ home with beautiful views and a garden with papaya, bananas, avocados, and aloe
A brand new home in Hawaii has hit the market for just $165,000 — but potential buyers will have to be comfortable using the toilet outside and having little protection from the elements.
The one-bedroom house, located in the town of Naalehu on the southern tip of the island of Hawaii, was built in 2021 and completed this year.
It has one enclosed bedroom measuring only 100 sq. ft. on the second floor, and everything else — including the kitchen, the bathroom, and the stairs to the second level — are outside.
But while there seems to be little in the way of protection against rain or wind, the seller promises ‘divine’ sunrises and sunsets with views over the island.

‘Oh and the sunrises and sunsets? Just divine! The ocean and mountain views are stunning from this property.’
The listing calls the house a ‘fully-functional home,’ boasting a solar energy photovoltaic system, a wind turbine, an a water catchment system.
‘Seller has had no issues powering the lights, radio, refrigerator, water pump, etc.,’ the listing says.
The house was built in a dirt clearing, with a ground floor that is open on two sides — and covered with bamboo on the other two.
That level is made up of a lanai, a type of Hawaiian ‘rear porch where the existing roofline of the house extends over a foundation typically made of concrete, stone, or pavers,’ explains Tammy Weir of Lanai Guy, according to MyDomaine.
The lanai houses a kitchen with a propane-powered range and refrigerator.
There is also a bathroom with bamboo walls — which, naturally, have gaps in them — that leaves bathers and toilet-users exposed to the elements.
Walking up the outdoor steps takes you to a porch with lounge furniture, and a door leading to the bedroom.
The bedroom appears to be the only space completely enclosed by walls. There is no closet, but it is currently outfitted with a clothing rack.
Yet for anyone thinking that the home might be a nice starting point to build onto, the listing warns that improvements are not permitted — but promises the home ‘is well-planned and thought-out and tastefully built with solid construction.’
The home sits on a quarter of an acre in Green Sands Community, and has its own garden with papaya, bananas, avocados, and aloe, among other plants.
A porch on the second floor is set up with lounge furniture and is also open to the elements
It is also 15 minutes from Punalu’u Black Sands Beach and close to Green Sands Beach and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
