Wrecker, a Border Collie, was adopted during lockdown by owner McKenzie Stage and her boyfriend Dalton Jesse from Princeton, Illonois, USA. It was hoped that the 11-month-old pup was going to help keep the sheep on the farm in check as part of their car towing business Jesse’s Wrecker Service.
However, the couple quickly noticed their new pup was constantly sneezing and his ears were easily irritated whilst on the job.
After a visit to the vets and an allergy test was conducted, it was discovered that Wrecker is very ironically, hypersensitive to sheep.
But that wasn’t just the only thing that triggered the pooches sneezes and itches, three different types of grass and weeds, four different trees, three different moulds, dust mites, cockroaches and even house flies were all listed as confirmed allergies.
McKenzie said: “The vet called me and started laughing. He said how Wrecker was highly allergic to sheep wool. I posted on my personal Facebook his results and we soon had the running joke of ‘you should get a refund for a sheepdog being allergic to sheep’.”
Hearing that their sheepdog was allergic to sheep was somewhat funny yet shocking.
Border Collie’s are well-known for being one of the intelligent dog breeds in the world and are used for herding livestock, particularly sheep.
McKenzie said: “He would try and herd his dad and grab him by the back of his work boots. He would try to herd our donkey through the pasture. It was in his nature to do this.
“But sheep’s wool is the highest allergy he has out of them all, scoring a high four on the scale. Anything two or above says on the paper it is necessary for intervention.”
To help cope with life on the farm, Wrecker now takes at-home injections and oral steroids and now enjoys life as the family pet.
The couple said they do not want a refund for Wrecker, but are still on the lookout for a new pup to take over the role of sheepdog.
McKenzie said: “He takes it like a champ and he’s such a happy dog. He now lives the easiest life getting cuddles from us instead.
“He goes outside to run all around the land and recently he enjoys going swimming too. He also loves truck rides and he will come on tow calls with us.
“We would have loved to let him herd but clearly that isn’t possible now. We love him so much.”
