Bank Holidays are a great occasion for most people to relax over an extended weekend. Royal Mail will deliver and collect mail throughout the week, but while the day of rest is welcomed by many, if you’re expecting deliveries or need to send post you may be wondering if Royal Mail is running any kind of service this bank holiday. Post offices will be open as normal throughout the bank holiday weekend, but you’re recommended to check your local branch before setting out to avoid disappointment.
Does post come on Bank Holiday Monday?
Bank and public holidays usually see some businesses close their doors or restrict their operating hours, and Monday, May 31 is no different.
This means there will be no postal deliveries or collection services this bank holiday Monday.
A statement on the Royal Mail website reads: “We deliver and collect your mail on most days of the year.
“However, we don’t usually deliver or collect on bank and public holidays.”
Does Royal Mail deliver parcels on bank holidays?
As it stands, Royal Mail doesn’t deliver parcels on Sundays and bank holidays, but that could be changing in the near future.
Royal Mail recently announced it will be trialling parcel deliveries on Sundays, while bank holidays haven’t yet been discussed.
Packages from major retailers working in connection with Royal Mail will be delivered seven days per week as the company looks to fulfil customer expectations.
The COVID-19 pandemic has seen unprecedented pressure put on the national mail delivery system, with a huge shift to online shopping and changing consumer needs.
A total of 496 million parcels were delivered by Royal Mail in the three months to December 27, 2020.
A new parcel hub with the capacity to process one million parcels per day is being built by the company in Daventry, Northamptonshire.
As is understood, it is the second and largest parcel hub designed and constructed to date.
Chief commercial officer of Royal Mail, Nick Landon said: “The UK already trusts us to deliver their purchases six days a week both quickly and conveniently.

“Now for the first time, our posties will be doing the same thing seven days a week.
“The last year has reset so many customer expectations and the desire for even more convenient and even more frequent parcel deliveries has certainly been one of them.
“We always listen to our customers, both senders and recipients, and the ask here was clear – we love what you do Monday to Saturday so please do the same on Sunday.
“So that is what we’re doing, as quickly as possible, so we can offer it to more and more customers across the course of this year.”
Royal Mail has already piloted Sunday deliveries once before in 2014, only within the M25 area, but decided against rolling out the service full time.
A spokesperson for the company said: “It was a completely different time then, we were very early adopters but we’re now seeing those seismic changes in consumer behaviour and the pandemic has accelerated it.
“We are all locked down at home and so what do we do? Get on the laptop and order things we like.”
The spokesperson said research carried out by Royal Mail showed 25 percent of customers wanted Sunday deliveries, a number that rose to 40 percent when dealing with younger customers under 45.
