A sandwich row has engulfed Celebrity Masterchef after viewers slammed contestants for ‘stretching the meaning of the word’ during one elimination challenge.
The semi-final of the BBC1 programme, saw the eight stars travel to County Durham, home to the Beamish Museum – a living museum that brings the history of the North East to life – to cook four dishes for 100 staff members.
And back in the MasterChef kitchen, the celebrities had to make their ultimate sandwich to stay in the competition.
However many put their own spin on the dish and created burgers, wraps and even a sandwich which took the shape of a Christmas cake.
Many viewers were stunned by the celebrity’s sandwiches, with one writing: ‘I’ve just seen the Christmas cake sandwich, it made me genuinely retch. No one needs to do that.’

During the second challenge of the episode, the celebrities had to make their ultimate sandwich to keep them in the competition.
Many of those watching said they felt a number of the dishes didn’t strictly fit into the ‘sandwich’ category
According to Oxford English Dictionary, a sandwich can be defined as an ‘article of food for a light meal or snack, composed of two thin slices of bread, usually buttered, with a savoury (originally meat, esp. beef or ham) or other filling.’
However the judges appeared to invite the celebrities to get inventive with the challenge.
John said: ‘You can use any influence from around the world, from a bao in China to a burger in America.
‘Even a ham and cheese toastie. The ultimate sandwich please. And at the end of this, one of you is going home.’
Mica said she ‘loved a good sandwich’ especially ‘after a night out.’
Gregg called it ‘the most versatile meal’, while John said: ‘A great sandwich has texture and flavour, it assaults your sense.’
Amy said sandwiches were her favourite thing in the world, adding: ‘I’m making a Boxing Day brioche sandwich.
‘It’s come from the meal that my family cook for boxing day and it means quite a lot to me, because I went into labour on Boxing Day and nearly missed this meal.’

The boxing day sandwich was a ham, cheese and coleslaw sandwich but with ‘many twists and turns.’
But she had competition for the festive themed bap – with opera singer Wynne Evans also making a boxing day sandwich.

John said: ‘This is going to be something we’ve never seen on Masterchef before.’
