All about Adam Rippon and fiancé Jussi-Pekka Kajaala’s engagement rings
America’s sweetheart Adam Rippon is officially off the market!
The Olympic figure skater secretly tied the knot with his Finnish real estate broker fiancé, Jussi-Pekka Kajaala, on New Year’s Eve.
“We’re unpredictable,” Rippon, 32, told People on Wednesday.
“I think everybody knew that we were going to do it and I think nobody knew if we were going to give them a heads up or not,” he continued. “And I guess we didn’t even know if we were giving ourselves a heads up.”
The “Dancing with the Stars” alum first announced his engagement to Kajaala, 34, in February 2021. He joked that the affair was “logical and cheap” — just as they wanted.
“We always wanted to do something simple and just the two of us,” he explained.
“And so we were looking at different options of what we could do and so obviously [we] reached out to [California marriage officiant] Maria and asked ‘When is [your] next availability for a wedding?’ And she goes, ‘I have availability this week, but I also have something today.’ And so then I said, ‘Listen, Maria, we’re on our way.’ We’re going to be there for the one o’clock appointment in Encino, California, the happiest place on earth.’”
Kajaala said they chose Dec. 31 because New Year’s Eve “isn’t a big thing” for them.
“We’re in bed like 10:30,” he added. “So then we decided that, oh, maybe going to use this day for something special like this and now we have a great meaning for that day.”
The couple, dressed in their “Easter Sunday Mass” best, were joined by their 4-month-old pit bull mix, Tony, when they exchanged vows.
“It was like what you would get from the dollar store if you knew you had a wedding in five minutes,” Rippon said, “but it was perfect.”
The newlyweds decided to use the same rings they had picked out in 2020 while in Finland together.
The matching rings feature a split style that creates the illusion of a double stack. While Kajaala’s is solid gold, Rippon’s features pavé diamonds around the entire band.
The couple revealed that they’ll host a “party” for their family and friends when the COVID-19 pandemic has settled down.
“Here and then one in Finland, eventually. Not like a wedding, but just friends over, family over,” Kajaala said. “Some good food. Drinks.”
Rippon chimed in, “I think we want to wait until it’s safer to travel. A lot of my family is out on the East coast. JP’s family is in Finland. So we want to find a way to make it work for everyone.”
Kajaala and Rippon started dating in 2018 after meeting on a dating app; the same year the athlete made history as the first openly gay American to medal at the Winter Olympics.
