Delphiniums bloom and grow in June and July producing flowering spikes which can reach more than two metres tall. The flowers are beloved by bees and other pollinators and look gorgeous as cut flowers in your home.

Perennial delphiniums are renowned for their rich colours.

These plants flower in early summer and are perfectly suited for borders and garden beds.

It is easy to grow annual delphiniums as they are smaller and will flower all summer.

Delphiniums are tall flowers which come in shades of blue, purple, dusky pink, red and white.

Delphiniums grow best in sunny areas with soil which is consistently moist.

They do not enjoy having dry soil so it is best to ensure they are watered regularly.

Mulch will be extremely helpful in retaining moisture, in addition to keeping the roots cool.

These plants prefer slightly alkaline soil and do not like to be submerged in water, instead preferring well-draining soil.

Delphiniums are amazing flowers which can grow to produce flower spikes which can reach more than two metres tall.

They are best known for their vivid sapphire shades, but come in a range of other colours.

They are in the buttercup family and have been grown in the UK for centuries.

The word delphinium derives from the Greek delphinos, which translates as dolphin – referring to the shape of the opening flowers.

Delphiniums do not need a lot of care when grow them.

These flowers should be cut back to the ground after flowering.

If you cut them at this stage you may be rewarded with a second flush of flowers in late August or September.

To cut back a delphinium you should begin as soon as the flower spikes begin to look tatty.

Cut every flowered stem right down the ground, but make sure to leave any developing side shoots.

You should also leave the remaining foliage at the base of the plant.

Make sure to water the plant well after you have completed this stage.

You should only begin cutting back your plant in autumn once the plant has finished flowering.

To keep plants flowering well, you can divide them every few years, in spring.
