Gardening tips: Four homemade hacks to kill garden weeds
One of the quickest ways to refresh any garden patio is to get rid of unsightly weeds.
The pesky plants don’t grow from the bottom up. Instead, they grow when the sand washes out allowing seedlings to fall from the top and into the spaces between the joints.
If paving is properly installed it will not be easily susceptible to weed growth.
However, if it has been a while since paving slabs have been sealed weeds will quickly spring, like it has for one gardener who voiced his dilemma.
Taking to the Loving Your Garden Facebook page, Simon Evans wrote: “Flowers and weeds are driving me mad growing in between my patio slabs. What can I do? It has to be dog-friendly.

“I do have a very large garden where I grow lots of flowers so I do attract insects and love them but I don’t want to keep weeding my patio.”
From the 70 group members who responded, the most common suggestion was to use boiling water.
Rob Lindley said: “It depends on what the weeds are. Annual and some perennial weeds die off after boiling water is poured on them.”
Maureen Stonehouse wrote: “Boiled water, while it is still hot, kills them right off.”

DougandFifi Reid said: “A gardener once told me to pour boiling water on paving weeds – and it works.”
Kerry Gowans commented: “Boiling water is all I use and I find it very efficient and environmentally safe.”
Jan Duncan agreed: “Yes boiling water, there’s nothing better and environmentally friendly than it.”
Edward Bateman added: “Boiling water straight from the kettle poured on the weeds.”
Paula Ross insisted: “Just pour boiling water in the cracks for a day or two. The weeds will shrivel up and die instantly. It’s an effective, free and easy method.” Stella Calkin replied: “This is what I was going to recommend. Worked for me.”
Although this method is free in terms of not having to go out and purchase a product, it will cost money to boil the kettle. It’s worth using this method when households are already using their kettle to boil water.
Boiling water will act as a contact herbicide, killing only the portion of the plant it comes in contact with. Of course, just as boiling water kills weeds, it can also kill our valuable plants if not used properly.
The heat from the plant collapses the plant’s cell structure and kills it. However, some hardy weeds may need more than one boiling water treatment.
