Warm weather and longer days mean many people are spending a lot of time in their gardens at the moment. While many gardeners pay a lot of attention to their flowers and plants, it’s important not to neglect the garden lawn too. Here are some top tips for looking after real and artificial grass.

Tips for looking after grass lawns

Perhaps the most simple thing someone can do to keep their lawn looking its best is to give it a regular trim.

Mowing the lawn regularly encourages thick grass to grow and deters weeds from sprouting.

Another tip for looking after grass is to pay attention to any moss that may have made its home on the lawn and find a suitable method to deal with it.

During the spring and summer months, the lawn will also benefit from being fed.

Pick a lawn fertiliser and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a lush, weed-free lawn.

No one likes a brown and dry lawn, so it is important grass gets enough water to flourish.

Usually, during the summer months, garden lawns shouldn’t have to be watered but in some cases, it might be necessary.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) explains: “If you do have to water the lawn and maintain a green sward, water when the soil becomes dry, but before the grass turns yellow or brown.

“If the ground is very hard, aerate it by spiking with a garden fork before watering, to aid water penetration.

“Watering once a week to every 10 days is normally sufficient. Ensure that the water reaches a depth of 10cm (four inches) after each watering.

“In the middle of summer, 1 sq m (1 sq yd) needs about 20-litres (five gallons) every seven days.”

Tips for looking after artificial grass

Many people opt for artificial grass because it is considered lower maintenance than a real grass lawn.

However, there are still some simple steps owners can take to keep their artificial grass looking its best.

Artificial grass can benefit from being brushed with a broom or a soft rake from time to time.

Be careful when brushing over the artificial grass as too much pressure could damage it.

To keep the grass clean, it’s a good idea to get rid of any debris, excess mud or leaves on the grass surface.

Artificial grass will need long-term maintenance, so pay attention to any holes or tears which may need repairing.

Any stains on artificial grass should be blotted quickly with paper towels to prevent permanent marks.
