As the temperatures drop, so does the soil in the garden. This means that grass growth is often slower, reducing the need to cut the grass as often. According to one expert, winter mowing is “usually not necessary”.
Pol Bishop, gardening expert for Fantastic Gardeners, shared grass cutting tips for the winter months.
The expert said: “Winter mowing is usually not necessary, unless the grass is still growing and the weather is mild.
“In this instance, you can mow occasionally with a high cut setting.
“However, don’t cut the grass if the ground is soft, frozen or during cold, drying winds.”
The expert explained that the lawn will continue to grow when the temperatures are above five degrees.
This means that the grass will still need to be cut.
However, Pol explained: “Cut it around 25 percent higher than during the summer.”
The expert added that gardeners should also get their lawnmower serviced during the winter months if needed.

Lawnmower servicing will help to detect any issues wrong with the mower that could potentially ruin the grass.
It is best done during the winter months when it is being used less, and also to avoid the Spring rush.
Pol added that gardeners can maintain their grass throughout winter by clearing debris and leaves.
The expert said: “Use a brush or a light rake to keep the lawn clean from leaves and debris.
“Keeping your lawn clean will improve drainage, relieve compaction and allow more air into the root system, leading to a healthier lawn.”
One common issue gardeners face during the winter months is worms and moles.
While some may see them as a nuisance, Pol explained: “Worms improve the nutrient content of a soil and benefit the soil structure positively.
“Leave worm casts to dry and then sweep them with a stiff brush.

“January and February are the months when mole activity can increase. Remove the mounds of earth and plant an overseed in Spring.”
During the winter months, rainfall is often heavier and more frequently.
This can cause problems for the grass if there is a poor drainage system in place.
The expert explained: “If your lawn is damaged by foot traffic when wet, consider placing stepping stones to allow access without causing damage.”
