Appearing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Alan Titchmarsh, who presents Love Your Weekend, discussed how the RHS Chelsea Flower Show would be impacted this year due to the event being rescheduled to the autumn.

Since the event’s inception 108 years ago, the prestigious event will take place in September for the first time, instead of May.

Alan noted that the change in season would make a dramatic difference in the plants and greenery that would be showcased.

“It will make a huge difference to what you’ll see at Chelsea flower show because, of course, we’re in a completely different season we’re almost two seasons away from where we were,” explained Alan.

“It was traditionally the third week in May and has been for over a century, when it’s shifted from late summer to very early autumn, you get a whole different plant palette.”

Reflecting on the borders in his garden, Alan said his featured Phlox, autumn daisies, Rudbeckias, and Helenium.

 “Dahlias are making a brilliant show,” he added.

Alan said he hoped the showcase of plants this year would offer an interesting insight into what gardeners could experiment with in their own green spaces.

“Particularly in the plant line, there will be so much to look at that’s quite unusual,” he said.

“What it will also do, I hope, will make people realise this is a great time of year in the garden.”

Alan pointed out that gardeners should be planting a variety of greenery each month.

“Everybody rushes to the garden centre in May and June and gets stuff that’s out then and by now gardens have often quietened down a bit,” he said.

“But mine hasn’t, simply because I like to get things that flower every month of the year.”

Urging gardeners to ensure their green space is planted with a variety of greenery, Alan told viewers: “Go to your garden centre once a month.”

Reflecting on the change in weather, Alan said he had been away and “left the garden in autumn and come back to high summer”.

He described the change in weather as a “strange juxtaposition of seasons.”

“The growth we’ve had this year has been quite remarkable,” he said. “It was fairly dry early on, but then we had that wet June.”

Alan added that it was a “bonus” when there were periods of sunshine at this time of year.

Having chosen to be interviewed in his garden for the show, Alan said: “It’s absolutely still here in my garden – there isn’t a breath of air.”

Alan is currently hosting Love Your Weekend, which featured Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York during Sunday’s show.
