Gabe (Akos Armont) has become a familiar face around the Bay after showing up to reconnect with Mackenzie (Emily Weir), four years after their engagement was called off. He has been helping Mack out with the business and getting familiar with the surf scene.

However, disaster strikes when Gabe gets hit in the head by a surfboard and stumbles onto the beach from the waves. Xander (Luke Van Os) notices and suggests hospital, but Gabe waves the idea away. However, when Gabe stumbles in Salt, Xander drags him to get medical attention.

In the hospital, Bree (Juliet Godwin) asks for Gabe’s medical history and he is forced to reveal a dark secret – a year ago, he was being treated for cancer. Bree thinks they need to do some bloodwork to check that the Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma hasn’t come back, but Gabe doesn’t want to face reality.

After some gentle encouragement, Bree gets Gabe over the line and sorts the blood tests. Her instincts were right, and the tests come back abnormal. Bree has no choice but to reveal the devastating news to Gabe that his cancer has come back.

Bree tries to discuss treatment options, but when Gabe learns the cancer has spread to his bones and there’s little they can do, he doesn’t want to hear anymore.

He leaves the hospital and is left with a new problem – he just got Mackenzie back. How is he going to break the news to her?
