David Domoney shares his summer gardening tips
According to Brian Davenport, owner and co-founder, The Solar Centre, some errors can make the difference between a “dull and dreamy space” and a “lush oasis at home”.
1. Starting too big
It can be tempting to go to the garden centre and buy lots of plants of different sizes and colours to add interest into the garden.
However, caring for lots of different plants can be hard, especially if they all have different needs, which will result in them “dying off fast”.
Brian said: “If you’re starting from scratch, consider picking a few low-maintenance plants like ornamental grasses or lavender.
“Or if you’re nervous about your green fingers, start working on a pathway or patio area. Successfully completing smaller projects will help you feel more confident when you’re ready to take on something slightly bigger.”

2. Letting weeds take over
Weeds can pop up all over the garden very quickly and can be an eyesore to look at, especially on lawns and patios.
If they are allowed to take over the lawn, patios and borders, they can be challenging to get rid of and may take some time.
Instead, regularly weed the garden to help keep it under control, pulling them up by hand if they will come up with the entire root or opting for white vinegar.

3. Using chemicals
Using chemical pesticides in the garden may help to target pests quickly, but they can also cause harm to other animals which visit the garden.
According to the expert, they should only be used as a last resort because there are plenty of other methods to try prior to this.
Britons should try to put up with some degree of pests in their garden unless they are damaging plants.
4. Not watering the garden
Some plants, crops and flowers love to be kept moist, while others can go a little longer without being hydrated.
This can depend on the season and type of plant however, so it is important to know how often to water them by checking their soil.
The expert continued: “Knowing how often to water can be tricky, as this will depend on the type of weather. During hot periods, some plants require watering once a day, while others can go a few weeks without water.”
