Gardening expert gives tips on deterring pets and pests
Although pigeons may seem like harmless pests they can quickly cause a lot of damage to plants if they decide to nest in your garden.
They will eat any plants or crops in the local area, often removing leaves and buds from flowers which will prevent them from blossoming next year. They will also leave a lot of bird droppings in your garden which can be a pain to tidy up.
Pigeons are known to feed in the early morning so it can be difficult to catch them in the act, but signs they are in your garden include lots of torn leaves around plants are are known to prefer grazing on peas, cherries, and currant plants.
Luckily, one gardening expert has an easy and harmless way to stop pigeons from destroying your garden. Yolanda Vanveen is a sustainable gardener who has shared her expertise on the best way to get rid of pigeons.
In one video, Yolanda said: “Now, pigeons are beautiful birds, but when you have many of them in your yard they can become quite a problem, especially if they start nesting in your attic or your trees or under the eaves in your house The best way to repel them is to just chase them with a hose, that’s probably the easiest way but that’s not a permanent solution.”

How to get rid of pigeons
Hot spice method
One effective way to keep pigeons away is to spread some type of hot spice around where they are nesting. Pigeons hate pungent and spicy scents as they irritate their sinuses.
Yolanda explained: “You need to find out where they’re nesting. If they’re nesting under the eaves or in a carport, you’ve got to make sure to use any type of hot spice like cayenne pepper or red hot chilli pepper and put it on the leaves or anywhere that they are hanging out.”
Other spices such as pepper or cinnamon can also be used or this method, as well as white vinegar, which will make a natural repellent to keep lots of birds away as well as just pigeons. This method should be applied during rainy or windy weather but works to keep pigeons away.

Wire method
Using a thin piece of wire will act as a pigeon deterrent. Attach a wire onto the surface of a fence, balcony or roof, and make sure there is around three inches of space between each wire.
The wire should not be pointed or have sharp edges, as the goal is to simply discourage the pigeons from landing.
Yolanda said: ”Just nailing a wire all the way around wherever they’re sitting. They can’t sit there anymore and they will find somewhere else.”
She added: “To repel pigeons is a challenge and the trick is to make sure they don’t have anywhere to sit. If they have nowhere to sit, they won’t hang out in your garden anymore.”
