Wisteria: David Domoney shares tips for plant

Wisterias are popular climbers that are currently trending on Pinterest. Recently, there has been a spike in searches for “wisteria” and “wisteria pergola”.

The plants have gained popularity after making an appearance at both the Chelsea Flower Show and on the hit Netflix series, Bridgerton.

For those looking to plant their own wisterias to enjoy for years to come, gardening and irrigation expert and director of Easy Garden Irrigation, Sean Lade has shared the “best time” of day to water wisterias.

Sean said when to water wisterias is a “hot debate” with different people having different answers.

He continued: “The consensus is to not water in the middle of the day.

“Personally, I say early morning is the best time to water your wisteria for several reasons.

“Firstly, watering in the morning ensures that the water will be able to soak deep into the soil before it has a chance to evaporate in the midday sun.

“This not only helps conserve water but also encourages the roots to grow deeper, promoting stronger, healthier plants.

“Watering in the morning also provides the wisteria with the moisture it needs to endure the heat of the day.

“Just like humans, plants often face greater stress during hot conditions, and having plenty of water helps them cope.”

Morning is also the “best time” as when wisteria foliage gets wet, it has a chance to dry out during the day.

If wisteria leaves remain wet for prolonged periods of time – like overnight – they can be more prone to fungal diseases.

However, not everyone has the chance to water wisteria in the morning. If that’s the case, Sean suggested watering them in the afternoon or early evening.

He added: “You should aim to water the plant’s base directly to minimise getting the foliage wet, reducing the risk of disease.”
