Energy drinks have been a long staple of many people’s diets, as they’re an easy way to get a pick-me-up pretty fast. Everyone went through their teenage years where we literally worshiped Red Bull and Monster drinks — despite how much our parents said they were “bad for us.” We even went through the phase of getting a vodka Red Bull at the bar to keep our energy pumping and our bodies moving on the dance floor.
While energy drinks do give us that extra boost we need to stay awake to finish that grueling final paper, or wake us up just in time for the early shift at work, they do have some downsides, as well. Sure, they provide us with energy, as promoted, but how long does that energy last and what’s the downsides of drinking them too often?
As it turns out, there are upsides and downsides to drinking energy drinks.
The good side and bad side of energy drinks
As it goes with anything in life, there are pros and cons to drinking energy drinks. Energy drinks do give you that extra boost of energy that you need, seeing as the main ingredients are sugar and caffeine. Because they give you a boost in energy, this can improve your overall “mood and attitude” (via Nova Medical Centers).
Not to mention, they are inexpensive to purchase. Many energy drinks also have Vitamin B in them, which can help fight cancer and heart disease (via The Active Times). Niacin, another ingredient in energy drinks, is also known to help with arthritis pain.
However, the downside of energy drinks is relevant too, particularly for those consumers who enjoy them often. Drinking energy drinks in excess can lead to heart problems down the road (via Journal of American Heart Association). Due to the amount of sugar in them, they can also cause an increase in weight gain and even lead to issues with diabetes in the long run. In addition, they can be come incredibly addicting, per Healthline, and dehydrate you (via The Healthy). Plus, if you drink too many energy drinks, you can also experience issues sleeping and it can lead to insomnia.
So, while you may be looking for a quick pick-me-up and fix, maybe dry something a bit more natural!
