Vegan cafe owner suffers ‘hate campaign’
Eating vegan or vegetarian food has almost become synonymous with being healthy these days.
Most people assume the vegan counterpart to meat would be a safer choice. However, following a Channel 4 documentary about vegan food, they’re not sure it is always the better choice.
Viewers were left feeling “sick” after watching how vegan sausages were made on Channel 4’s Supermarkets Unwrapped: The Vegan Aisle. The documentary delved into how several commonly found vegan products are sourced and made.
It answered questions such as how vegan burgers are made, and how milk is derived from oats.
In one particular episode, journalist John Whaite visited a sausage factory to see the vegan alternative being produced.
He and his team looked into how plan-based sausages were made. They noticed a lot of vegan sausages in stores have the same type of casings that meat sausages are found in. So they sought to identify the differences.
They went to Heck Foods in Yorkshire where he met with innovations manager Callum Smith, who explained that they “use a textured vegetable protein” to make the product taste similar to a pork sausage.
He explained: “We bump the meat-free sausage mix and a gel into this little head at the same time. This is alginate gel and it’s made from seaweed.”
The vegetable sausage mix then passes under calcium chloride solution, the skin of the sausage is cut and it’s ready to be cut into individual portions, ready for the consumer.

This did not sit right with viewers, with a Twitter user writing: “This Channel 4 program ‘Supermarket Unwrapped’ really showing some disgusting concoctions in the making of vegan food”. They added a vomiting emoji to drive the point home.
Another said: “Watching Supermarkets Unwrapped on Channel 4. They’re doing vegan aisle. Dear God, the extent manufacturers will go to produce ultra-processed food c*** to replace natural foods.
“If you want to be vegan, eat actual plants, not this synthetic sh**.”
