MANY people love tucking into a delicious bag of M&M’s – but do you know what the name stands for?

Sweet lovers are only just stopping to think about what the initials mean and discovering the answer. 

The multi-coloured shelled chocolate treats have tiny Ms printed on the top, and it’s all down the founders. 

M&M’s are owned by Mars Inc, so you’d be correct in thinking one of the “M”s stands for that.

But what about the second “M”?

This is the name of the man called (Bruce) Murrie who helped develop the iconic candy-coated chocolate pieces with Mars.

After a fall-out with his father Frank Mars in 1932, Forrest Mars went to England to start manufacturing Mars bars.

During his time, he noticed people eating small chocolate buttons with a hard sugar shell coating to prevent it from melting.

The idea had reportedly been popular with soldiers in the Spanish Civil War who wanted to carry chocolates in warmer climates without it melting.

Forrest began to get interested in the idea of developing his own product which could be transported in high temperatures.

And this would also be later reflected in the future M&M’s slogan “melts in your mouth, not in your hand.”

Mars approached Bruce Murrie, who was the son of Hershey Chocolate's president William F. R. Murrie, with the idea, and he was impressed.

In 1940, M&M Ltd was born and hit US shelves in 1941, and came to the UK in the 80s.
