While Hyperloop systems are being devised and constructed around the world in various metro areas, one in particular has the design pedigree to bring form to the high-speed function. Zaha Hadid Architects has announced that it is partnering with Hyperloop Italia to design architecture and infrastructure around the high speed transit system.
The Hyperloop system, first proposed by Elon Musk in 2012, uses low-pressure tubes and magnetic currents to propel passenger pods through pneumatic channels. Basically, it’s the drive through tube at the bank, just with people inside. For ZHA’s involvement, the firm will be working alongside the engineers and developers from Hyperloop to create the “next phase” of work, according to a statement from the firm principal, Patrik Schumacher.
“We are looking forward to collaborating with Hyperloop Italia; marrying transformative architecture, engineering and urban planning with the most efficient and sustainable transport network to significantly improve accessibility, connectivity, and well-being in our cities,” Schumacher said in a statement—presumably referring to the pods and architecture of station stops.
Hyperloop Italia is currently working on feasibility tests for its projected route, which will run from Milan to Malpensa Airport. If successful, the time to travel from one to the other will shrink from 43 minutes to merely 10. In addition to the time saved, the project will also be fueled entirely by renewable resources. The Hyperloop founders and Zaha Hadid Architects have emphasized the importance of using renewable energy sources, merging the advancement of technology with the importance of energy conservation.
In other architecture news, Zaha Hadid Architects has been hard at work on another project, a new research facility in Saudi Arabia.
