Noel Fielding has confessed it was a ‘bit weird’ hosting the Great British Bake Off with Matt Lucas.

The Mighty Boosh star, 50, joined the beloved programme in 2017, and initially presented alongside Sandi Toksvig before the Little Britain actor, 49, replaced her three years later.

In December, Matt announced he was quitting GBBO because he was finding it difficult balancing multiple commitments, including the show, with Alison Hammond later revealed as Noel’s new co-host.

Reflecting on his two-year stint with Matt, the comedian said it was a ‘bit weird’ because they were friends and ‘probably the same low-status person from our respective double acts.’

Noel worked with Julian Barrett on the Mighty Boosh, while Matt frequently collaborated with David Walliams, including on Little Britain.

He told the Radio Times magazine: ‘With Matt it was a bit weird, because we’re mates and are probably the same low-status person from our respective double acts, where he has [David] Walliams and I have Julian [Barrett].

‘It was more difficult to find how we worked together, but we managed to find a way.’

Noel also teased what to expect with his new partnership with This Morning star Alison, 48, who, it has been claimed, has already ‘saved’ the show after disappointing ratings last season.

He shared: ‘Alison’s hilarious, but she’s not a comedian trying to make jokes, which made it a bit easier.

‘We weren’t trying to work out how to do it, we just did it. We came together like jazz musicians. It was effortless and we laughed a lot.’

It comes as the new contestants for the next season of GBBO have been revealed, including the show’s first-ever deaf contestant.

The line-up also features a student, a vegetable grower, a chartered accountant and a PE teacher.

Bake Off has also reportedly undergone a ‘huge revamp’ after realising last year’s show ‘didn’t really work’.

‘We’re going to strip it back to basics, with a few twists,’ an insider told the Mirror.

The Great British Bake Off returns on Tuesday September 26 at 8pm on Channel 4.
