To kick off the 2022 Oscars, Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes were prepared to take a few playful digs at the star-studded audience. But before the three hosts could say a word, DJ Khaled ran out onstage, mic in hand, to hype up the stars ahead of the momentous night.
“Hold up, hold up — let me introduce the three queens right,” Khaled said into the mic, dishing out compliments left and right. “Let me do this the right way. I’m talking about actresses, comedians, moguls, bosses. I’m talking about outfits that look amazing. They didn’t believe in us. You know we did the best, right? Make some noise. Come on!”
Flattered, Schumer, Hall, and Sykes thanked Khaled before diving straight into their opening speech. “This year, the academy hired three women to host because it’s cheaper than hiring one man,” Schumer said. “But I’m still excited to be hosting, representing Black women who are standing proud,” Hall added. Seconds into their skit, the hosts unleashed a flurry of pre-rehearsed jokes poking fun at several familiar faces in the audience, including Samuel L. Jackson, LeBron James, and Timothée Chalamet. “We’ve been dealing with COVID for two years. It’s been really hard on people,” Hall said as Schumer nodded and added, “Look at Timothée Chalamet.” The camera panned to a shot of J.K. Simmons and then to the actual (shirtless) Chalamet laughing off the joke.
