Lizzo on “The Little Mermaid” Audition: “I Was Down to Make Ursula a THOT”
Lizzo is pretty good about reminding herself that she’s “the sh*t” but auditioning for roles? Apparently, that’s a slightly different story. In a recent interview with Variety, the three-time Grammy-winning cover star opened up about auditioning to play Ursula in Disney’s upcoming live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.” “I’m not good at auditioning. I’m like, ‘Put me in the scene. Don’t ask me to audition. Just write it for me,'” she said, before adding that she wanted to make Ursula a “THOT, shaking ass.”
The “Rumors” singer also revealed what Melissa McCarthy, who landed the coveted role of Ursula, said to her when they ran into each other at Adele’s “One Night Only” concert in November 2021. “She was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa.’ And I was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa. And I also auditioned for Ursula,'” Lizzo told Variety. “And she was like, ‘Well, why the hell did I get the part?,’ which is a classic Melissa McCarthy thing to say. And then I was like, ‘Girl, because my audition was terrible,'” she added before joking that she may have “ruined” her chances with Tyler Perry since the director walked by right as she made those comments.
She did, however, set the record straight about her Ursula audition, saying, “My audition was good. You can ask Disney. I don’t want to talk too much about it. The singing was great. I’ll just say that.”
Fresh off teasing a new self-love anthem via TikTok, Lizzo gave fans an idea of what they can expect to hear from her next album. “Broadly, I’ve been working on this album since the summer of 2018. It has evolved to a place where I’m proud,” she said, noting that it’s “one of the most musically badass, daring and sophisticated bodies of work” she’s ever created to date. She added, “All I want to do is help people through my music.”
While most of the details are still under wraps, Lizzo called her next LP a “love album,” which makes sense given that she was seen holding hands with a mystery man while exiting Craig’s in West Hollywood on Valentine’s Day.
In addition to new music, the 33-year-old performer spoke to finally receiving credit as a producer. “I’ve been producing for a long time, and I didn’t even know that was what it was called,” she shared. “I’m finally getting paid and credited doing this. I’m a very hands-on person. Anything that I’ve put out, I’ve touched so many f*cking times.”
No stranger to making boss moves, Lizzo recently announced she’s starring in a new reality dance competition series, “Watch Out For the Big Grrrls.” In the eight-episode series, she searches for curvy backup dancers for her upcoming world tour. “Girls that look like me don’t get representation,” Lizzo says in the trailer for the new show, which is set to premiere on Prime Video on March 25. “It’s time to pull up my sleeves and find them myself. We thicc and we pretty and know what we ’bout. It’s the battle of the big girls.” Check out the trailer below!
