A more detailed update has broken down everything coming to Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0. when Season 2 launches next week.
While Activision and Infinity Ward have shared plenty of information regarding updates and new additions to Call Of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and its DMZ mode for Season 2, they’ve barely said anything about Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Now, however, Activision has put out a far meatier breakdown of everything players can expect from the coming season, across both games, and while Warzone 2.0 still has the lion’s share, fans now have a proper idea of what to expect in Modern Warfare 2.
Aside from the long awaited addition of ranked play and seven additional gameplay modes, including Gun Game and Hardcore, Modern Warfare 2 will receive two new multiplayer maps for the core 6v6 mode… except they’re technically not new.
The first, Dome, shares a name with two other maps from previous Call Of Duty games. Dome debuted in 2008’s Call Of Duty: World At War and was remade for Call Of Duty: Vanguard, with a second iteration appearing in 2011’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and later Call Of Duty: Mobile.
It’s the second iteration that will be appearing in Modern Warfare 2, with Activision even acknowledging that it ‘bears a striking resemblance to one of Call Of Duty’s classic maps.’
The other map is Valderas Museum, which was created for Modern Warfare 2 but already appeared in the game’s beta test and was mysteriously absent when the game launched.
Combined with the fact that Season 1 added two other maps from previous games, you could argue that Modern Warfare 2 has yet to see a wholly original multiplayer map since it launched.
Two more battle maps – Zaya Observatory and Al Malik International – for the game’s Ground War and Invasion modes will be added as well, but these are locations lifted from Warzone 2.0.’s Al Mazrah map, so they can’t be classified as new either.
What doesn’t help is that the aforementioned gameplay modes also aren’t new. Every one of them has been featured in previous Call Of Duty games, with three of them not arriving until partway through the season.
One piece of content that will be entirely new is the second raid. As a reminder, Modern Warfare 2’s raids are continuations of the main campaign’s story, with the first having come out in December.
‘Prepare to squad up for whatever gauntlet lies ahead – even if it means finding unlikely allies to help tie up those loose ends,’ is all Activision’s blog post says about it.
Unfortunately, it won’t be available when Season 2 launches next week, on Wednesday, February 15, and is instead planned as a mid-season update.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
