The third and final instalment in the BBC and HBO’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s epic fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials will be arriving on our screens this winter. Here’s everything you need to know, including cast, trailer and release date.
It’s been a mighty long wait since we last saw the likes of Lyra, Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel on our TV screens, but after a long pandemic-induced delay, the final instalment of the BBC and HBO’s adaptation of His Dark Materials will be arriving on our screens this winter.
Based on the events of The Amber Spyglass, the final volume in Philip Pullman’s beloved award-winning fantasy trilogy, the third season of the hit coming-of-age drama brings a welcome dose of fantastical adventure to our screens, which is perfect timing for any fans mourning the end of the first seasons of House Of The Dragon and The Rings Of Power.

Although plot details of His Dark Materials are always kept closely under wraps, we do know that one epic multidimensional battle is headed our way in the final chapter of the series.
During a recent panel at the New York Comic-Con, HBO finally unveiled the first footage from the third series, giving us a sneak peek at Lyra’s father Lord Asriel’s (played by James McAvoy) great war against the Authority, aka God.
The teaser shows Asriel assembling an army of angels, daemons, witches and rebellious angels to take down the Authority, including Serafina Pekkala (Ruta Gedmintas) and a new character, Commander Ogunwe (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), the leader of Asriel’s military forces.
“I am gathering the greatest from every world to help me wage war,” he declares. “They are but one arm of the beast,” he later adds. “We cut off the head and the rest will crumble.”
“It’s McAvoy as Asriel unleashed,” executive producer Jane Tranter previously told EW.
“He’s such a dick and he’s such a bad father,” McAvoy also remarked of his character. “He’s doing it for the right reasons, but he’s doing it all the wrong way. The destination is more important than the journey for him. The ends totally justify the means for him. He’s a leader and a world-changer and a thinker and a doer before he is a father.”
We also see the return ofthe prophesied Eve child Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen), who was kidnapped by her evil mother, Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson), in season two.
“There are forces out there, Lyra, that you can’t begin to understand,” Mrs Coulter tells Lyra. “I know you won’t believe me, but I am doing this for you.”
The teaser also shows a glimpse of Lyra and Will Parry (Amir Wilson), the bearer of the portal-creating Subtle Knife, travelling to the Land of the Dead, a parallel dimension akin to the underworld.
Excitingly, we also get a glimpse of Hamilton and Mary Poppins Returns star Lin-Manuel Miranda’s surprise return as aeronaut Lee Scoresby, despite the character’s apparent demise in season two.
“Well, I’ll be damned,” he tells Lyra.
Alongside the new teaser, a US release date was also confirmed at the Comic-Con panel. The third season will premiere with two episodes back-to-back on 5 December 2022, followed by two new episodes weekly until the finale airs on 26 December.
While an exact UK release date and schedule has yet to be confirmed, we do know season three will arrive on BBC One in December 2022. Watch this space for more details.
