The first Trooping the Colour Parade of King Charles' reign takes place in London today as the seven regiments of the Household Division take part in a breath-taking display of military pageantry between Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards Parade at Whitehall.
While it the celebration will bear and undoubtable similarity to Their Majesties Coronation just over a month ago, this year's celebration will have that added touch of poignancy as it is the first without Queen Elizabeth present in seven decades.
King Charles will also become the first reigning monarch in 36 years to ride on horseback in the parade. His late mother did this from 1952 to 1986 and later opted to ride in a horse drawn carriage.
Trooping the Colour – also known as The King’s Birthday Parade – marks the official birthday of the sovereign, rather than their actual birthday, which in King Charles’ case falls on November 14.
It has been an annual event since 1760, after the accession of King George III. The term refers to the act of parading the flag of that year’s chosen regiment – in this case the 1st Battalion of the Welsh Guards, of which The Prince of Wales is Colonel.
King Charles will be accompanied by his eldest son and two siblings on horseback
When the King rides from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, he will be joined on horseback by the royal Colonels.
The Prince of Wales (Colonel of the Welsh Guards), The Princess Royal (Gold Stick in Waiting and Colonel of The Blues and Royals) and, for the first time ever, The Duke of Edinburgh will ride during the ceremony in his role as Colonel of the 1st Battalion London Guards.
