Rylan Clark has revealed he was admitted to hospital after becoming ‘quite ill’ and fearing he wouldn’t be able to continue living after his marriage broke down.
The Strictly: It Takes Two presenter split from husband Dan Neal last year after six years of marriage. It prompted Rylan to take a four-month break from the spotlight to deal with the heartbreak but revealed things ‘very bad’.
Opening up to The Guardian’s Observer, Rylan explained: ‘I’d got to the point where I didn’t know if I wanted to come back. Or whether I would be able to do this job again. I’d got… quite ill.
‘I went down to just over 9st and I’m 6ft 4in. It got bad. Like, very bad. And I didn’t think it would get better. I needed help…
‘Everyone feels like I’m their mate. I was probably talking to five million people a night. But last summer for the first time, I literally felt alone.’
Rylan – whose real name is Ross Richard Clark – went on to explain the coping mechanisms of his TV persona and who he is behind closed doors. He said that ‘Rylan’ is able to shrug off difficult situations in life and ‘take a lot of s**t’ but ‘Ross’ doesn’t ‘deal with that well’.
‘I didn’t think I’d be here. I didn’t think I could continue,’ he stated.
When asked if he meant to work or to live, Rylan replied: ‘Both. I didn’t think I’d actually come back. I was very… gone.’
The former Big Brother host then revealed he was admitted into hospital ‘for safety reasons’ because he no longer knew himself, adding that he was a ‘danger’ to himself.
He revealed: ‘I’m the last person that my friends would ever believe could feel as low as I did. Superficially, on paper, I can look after myself, but actually in that moment and for months after, none of the money or the fame mattered. I did not know myself at certain points.
‘I was having thoughts and doing things that made me… f***** up, for want of a better word. I didn’t understand why I was doing that to myself. So, I went away for a bit.’
The presenter is doing better now and has returned to TV hosting various shows.
Rylan and Dan, who starred on Big Brother in 2014, were engaged in September 2015 and tied the knot the following year.
After they announced their separation, Rylan thanked fans for their support, writing in a message: ‘I just wanted to write a message to thank you all for the love and kindness you have shown us.
‘We are currently prioritising our mental health and looking after the ones around us we love most.’
