Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor – the eldest child of Prince Edward and his wife Sophie Wessex – celebrates turning 19 today.

It is expected that Lady Louise's family and proud parents – of whom are understood to be extremely close – will have pulled out all of the stops to ensure that she enjoys the very special day.

Though this may be the case however, it is likely that the birthday celebrations may be tinged with a sadness over the fact that this is Lady Louise's first birthday since the tragic loss of her paternal grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

It is widely understood that Lady Louise – who has remained majorly out of the spotlight whilst growing up – was especially close to her grandparents.

The fact that the Wessex's home in Bagshot Park meant that both she and her brother James, Viscount Severn, were able to make regular visits to the late Queen and Duke of Edinburgh as they were growing up.

The public's increased level of interest on the young Royal's life began when the youngster attended Prince Philip's memorial service at Westminster Abbey in April last year at age just 17, where she wore an equestrian broach in a sweet tribute to her late grandfather and their shared love of horse riding.


It is believed that the young Royal famously inherited her grandparents' love of horse riding, after she led a tear-jerking procession at the Royal Windsor Horse Show driving the late Prince Philip's carriage following his death last year.

As well as this, following the passing of her grandmother The Queen back in September, Lady Louise was once against thrust into the spotlight under sad circumstances.

And along with The Queen's other grandchildren, she stood vigil at the Queen's coffin during the official Lying in State in the days that followed.
